These raids are inhumane, demoralizing, and counterproductive

Rockville, Md. – The Latino Democratic Club of Montgomery County raises its voice along with many others in our community – including our County Executive and County Council – to say NO to ICE immigration raids targeting Central American families.

These raids are inhumane. Families are being torn apart. Children taken from parents. Parents taken from children. These are not the values of the U.S.A.

These raids are demoralizing. Our Central American community has worked hard over the years to establish itself as a robust, vibrant, and contributing part of the fabric that is Montgomery County. These raids tax the good will of our Central American community to be full participants in their communities.

These raids are counterproductive. These raids break the trust that we’ve worked years to establish between our Central American community and our civic infrastructure. We want all new Americans to feel comfortable calling the police when need be; participate in community meetings; and send their children to school without worrying if they will be yanked away by ICE.

We want to ensure that the children fleeing violence and their families are given due process – not be treated as criminals (which they are not!) or hastily taken away without due process (which is all too often happening.) We want to ensure these children and families receive the support and services they need in order to continue with their lives and successfully adapt in our county.

We wholeheartedly support the statements released by our County Executive and County Council (which can be found in English and Spanish) pledging their support for the Central American community in our County.

We demand an immediate and unequivocal stop to these raids. Now!
